Abstract painting with blocks of colour.

John Hoyland was born on 12th October 1934 in Sheffield, Yorkshire and studied at Sheffield School of Art and Crafts within the junior art department (1946-51) before going on to Sheffield College of Art (1951-56), and the Royal Academy Schools, London (1956-60). He was appointed Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy Schools in 1999. He then died on 31st July 2011 at the age of 76.

I like this painting because of the range of colours that are included throughout the whole thing. They are all random yet they look so beautiful together and haven't mixed to make a really nasty colour: they have all stayed vibrant and fun. I also like it because of all of the straight edges and all of the separation of the colours, I like the fact that they aren't all blended into one and are different. The blue half of the painting really appeals to me because I love the sea and the different shades of blue make it look like waves. The other half of the painting looks like the countryside to me: with the red squares being barns and the green pieces being the grass. The other colours on the canvas could be different crops growing next to the barn or they could be different coloured flowers.

I also like how some of the paint is so thin that it has just dripped off of the canvas while John Hoyland was painting and it gives it a bit more dimension. In addition, when you stand up next to it, you can see all of the different thicknesses of the paint from when he created this piece. It is really interesting to see the texture of the surface of the canvas.
